Seemingly Innocent Diet Factors That Could Cause Weight Gain

Weight Gain causesFoods are a funny thing in that it may seem as though all we need to do is count calories or carbs in order to lose weight, but they always seem to have other plans. The issue is that foods aren’t just made up of one or two types of substances and weight gain can result. They are made of a huge spectrum of different types of nutrients, chemicals, and other types of substance that react in the body in their own unique ways.

Because of this, despite the fact that you are eating a healthy diet and are trying to remain relatively active, it can still feel as though you’re not making any progress at all or that you even see weight gain. Is it because of hormones? Is it due to a shift in body composition? Perhaps. Or it could be that your seemingly innocent diet is actually peppered with foods that are working against your efforts.

Among the most problematic of the substances that are causing these weight gain issues are obesogens. These naturally occurring food chemicals disrupt the way that our bodies function. They change our hormone balance and can throw our digestive tract flora out of whack. This can send the body the wrong signals, such as in the form of hunger, fatigue, a boost in fat storage, a growth in the number of fat cells, or a range of other effects that can not only make it tough to lose weight, but that can also make it easy to gain.

Check out the types of obesogens that are commonly found in the average diet and see if you could be a victim of their effects:

Bisphenol-A (BPA) – this is found primarily in plastics, not the food itself, but when your food has been packaged in BPA containing plastic, stored in it, or served on it, then the BPA can move from the plastic and into the food surprisingly quickly. One of the largest sources of BPA-laden food is canned tuna.

Triflumizole – this has become a problem in conventional produce, though not nearly as much in organic. This substance is found in a common fungicide that is applied to crops but that then remains on the produce which we consume and that then disrupts our body systems.

Emulsifiers – these are very common types of additives that are found in processed foods in order to stop the ingredients from separating and to improve the texture. They can be found in everything from salad dressings to mayonnaise and other thickened substances.

Hormones and Antibiotics – livestock such as cattle are regularly treated with these substances in order to promote faster growth and to prevent or treat infection.

Perfluoroctanoic acid (PFOA) – this possible weight gain culprit is a substance that is often found in the coating of nonstick cookware (one of the branded versions of this substance is called Teflon).
